GTA VI Map Is Twice the Size of GTA V and Three Times Larger Than Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games has revealed just how enormous the world of Grand Theft Auto VI is going to be, and the numbers are significantly larger than many fans expected. According to information shared by Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson, the full map of Leonida is approximately twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V's world and three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's map.

The revelation gives players a much better idea of the scale Rockstar has been aiming for with its next major open-world game. GTA VI is not simply expanding upon the formula established by GTA V. Instead, Rockstar appears to be building one of the largest and most detailed environments ever created for the Grand Theft Auto series.

GTA VI's World Will Be Massive

The most impressive figure concerns the overall size of Leonida, the fictional US state where GTA VI takes place.

According to Rob Nelson, the complete map is approximately twice as large as the world featured in GTA V. It is also around three times the size of the open world seen in Red Dead Redemption 2.

That comparison is particularly striking because Red Dead Redemption 2 is already famous for having an enormous and highly detailed world.

Rockstar's previous western adventure allowed players to travel through cities, forests, mountains, swamps, deserts and numerous smaller settlements. Despite that scale, GTA VI is expected to provide an even larger environment while also introducing a much more densely populated modern setting.

The difference should be especially noticeable when travelling between different regions of Leonida.

Instead of simply creating a larger empty space, Rockstar appears to be concentrating on filling the world with buildings, roads, vehicles, characters, wildlife, activities and other interactive elements.

Vice City Alone Is Bigger Than Los Santos

The scale becomes even more surprising when looking specifically at the game's main city.

According to the information revealed by Nelson, Vice City itself is approximately twice the size of Los Santos, the central urban area of GTA V.

Los Santos was already considerably larger than the cities featured in previous Grand Theft Auto games. It combined a huge metropolitan area with beaches, highways, industrial districts, residential neighbourhoods, mountains and surrounding countryside.

GTA VI's version of Vice City is therefore expected to offer considerably more room to explore.

The city is inspired by Miami and represents one of the most important locations in Leonida. However, unlike the original Vice City from the 2002 game, the new version is being developed with modern hardware and Rockstar's latest technology.

This means that players can expect a considerably more complex environment, with far greater detail and more activity taking place throughout the city.

Bigger Does Not Necessarily Mean Empty

One of the biggest concerns surrounding extremely large open-world games is whether the additional space will actually be useful.

A huge map can quickly become boring if large sections of it exist simply to increase the game's geographical dimensions.

Rockstar appears to be taking a different approach with GTA VI.

The game is reportedly designed not only to be larger but also denser than its predecessors. This means that the developers are attempting to place more objects, NPCs, buildings, vegetation and interactive elements into the environment.

The result could be a world that feels significantly more alive than GTA V despite being substantially larger.

The recently shown gameplay footage has already provided glimpses of this approach. Streets appear crowded with pedestrians and vehicles, while different areas of Leonida feature their own visual identities and activities.

The goal seems to be making exploration itself an important part of the experience rather than simply providing a large area between missions.

A Much Longer Adventure

The enormous map is not the only thing that suggests GTA VI could be Rockstar's most ambitious game yet.

Rob Nelson has also discussed the amount of time required to complete his own recent playthrough of the game.

According to information previously reported by The New York Times, Nelson's February 2026 playthrough took approximately 80 hours to complete. Importantly, this was not described as a 100 percent completion run.

The playthrough included the main campaign as well as optional objectives that could have narrative consequences.

This provides an interesting comparison with Red Dead Redemption 2, which generally takes considerably less time for most players to complete its main story and related content.

If GTA VI really offers an approximately 80-hour experience while also providing a world twice the size of GTA V, players could have an enormous amount of content to explore.

Of course, playtime will vary considerably depending on how people approach the game. Players who concentrate exclusively on the main storyline may finish considerably faster, while those who explore Leonida and participate in optional activities could spend much longer in the world.

Rockstar Is Raising the Open-World Standard

GTA V was already considered an ambitious open-world game when it launched in 2013. Its map combined Los Santos with a large surrounding countryside and numerous distinct environments.

More than a decade later, Rockstar is attempting to push the concept much further.

The technological leap between GTA V and GTA VI is enormous. GTA V was originally designed for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generation, while GTA VI is being developed specifically for current-generation hardware.

That allows Rockstar to create substantially more detailed environments, improved character models, more sophisticated animations, greater visual density and much more complex interactions.

The challenge is making all of these elements work together across an enormous world.

If Rockstar succeeds, GTA VI could establish a new benchmark for open-world design.

The Importance of Leonida

Another important difference is that GTA VI does not appear to be built around a single city alone.

Leonida is designed as a complete state, with Vice City serving as its biggest urban centre. The surrounding areas should provide a significant contrast to the dense city environment.

This gives Rockstar an opportunity to create a wider variety of gameplay situations.

Players can move from busy urban streets to quieter rural locations, beaches, highways, waterways and other environments without leaving the same game world.

That geographical variety could make exploration much more interesting, particularly when combined with the game's vehicles and other transportation options.

GTA VI Could Be Rockstar's Biggest World Yet

The numbers are impressive on their own, but the real significance of GTA VI's map will ultimately depend on how Rockstar uses all that space.

A map twice the size of GTA V is impressive. A world three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2 sounds even more extraordinary.

However, the most important factor will be what players can actually do inside it.

If Rockstar succeeds in combining the enormous scale with the density, interactivity and attention to detail that made Red Dead Redemption 2 so memorable, GTA VI could deliver one of the most ambitious open-world experiences ever made.

With Vice City alone reportedly twice the size of Los Santos, and the complete Leonida map reaching approximately twice the size of GTA V and three times that of Red Dead Redemption 2, there should be no shortage of places to discover.

GTA VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For Rockstar fans, the message is becoming increasingly clear: GTA VI is not simply going to be another Grand Theft Auto game. It is shaping up to be an enormous technological and creative leap designed to keep players exploring Leonida for years.
