GTA 6 COULD BE BANNED IN BRAZIL? - THE "FELCA LAW" HAS SPARKED A NEW WAVE OF FEARS

A new controversy is exploding among Brazilian gamers, and this time the target is one of the most anticipated games in history. Could Grand Theft Auto VI actually be banned in Brazil?

At first glance, the idea sounds absurd. GTA VI is one of the biggest entertainment launches of the decade, and there is currently no official decision banning the game in Brazil. But in combination of Brazil's increasingly aggressive digital regulation, the controversial ECA Digital — popularly known as the "Felca Law" — and recent actions against digital platforms has created fertile ground for rumours.

And there is already one very real reason for GTA fans to pay attention: Rockstar has already stopped selling its PC games directly through its own Brazilian store.

So, is GTA VI actually heading towards a Brazilian ban? The answer right now is probably not — but the possibility is certainly more interesting than it was a year ago.

🚨 THE FELCA LAW IS AT THE CENTRE OF THE CONTROVERSY

Brazil's Law No. 15.211/2025, officially called the Digital Statute of Children and Adolescents, came into force on March 17, 2026.

The legislation establishes new obligations for digital services that can be accessed by children and teenagers, including age verification, parental controls and measures designed to prevent minors from accessing certain categories of harmful content.

The law also addresses electronic games.

Among other provisions, it restricts loot boxes in games directed at children and adolescents or likely to be accessed by them. It also introduces considerably stronger requirements surrounding age verification and parental controls.

That is where things become interesting for GTA VI.

Grand Theft Auto has always been an 18+ franchise, containing violence, crime, drugs, sexual content and other mature themes. GTA VI is unlikely to be any different.

That does not automatically make it illegal in Brazil.

But it does mean that companies distributing the game must deal with a significantly more demanding regulatory environment.

🎮 ROCKSTAR HAS ALREADY TAKEN ACTION

The biggest reason the current rumours cannot simply be dismissed is something that actually happened.

When the ECA Digital came into force, Rockstar stopped selling its PC games directly through the Rockstar Games Store and Rockstar Games Launcher in Brazil.

That decision immediately generated speculation about GTA VI.

Could the same thing eventually happen to GTA VI?

Technically, Rockstar's decision demonstrates that the company is willing to withdraw its own sales channel rather than immediately adapt its proprietary store to the new requirements.

However, there is an extremely important distinction.

Rockstar did not ban GTA games from Brazil.

The company's existing games remained available through other platforms, including PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and other digital distribution channels. GTA VI itself was not prohibited.

That means the current evidence points toward a distribution and compliance problem, not a government ban on Grand Theft Auto.

⚖️ BUT WHAT IF AUTHORITIES GO FURTHER?

This is where the speculation becomes considerably more dramatic.

Brazil has demonstrated that regulators are increasingly willing to impose serious restrictions on digital services that authorities believe are failing to protect minors.

The clearest recent example is Discord.

In August 2026, Brazil's National Data Protection Authority ordered Discord to suspend its live-streaming functionality in the country after identifying serious concerns involving the protection of children and adolescents. The measure was explicitly described as preventive and targeted specific functionality rather than banning the entire platform.

The situation subsequently escalated into negotiations and legal proceedings involving the Brazilian government and Discord. As of September 2026, the platform is still dealing with demands for stronger safeguards and regulatory compliance.

That is significant because it demonstrates something that previously seemed less likely:

Brazilian authorities are willing to restrict major international technology platforms when they believe existing safeguards are insufficient.

The question is whether the same philosophy could eventually be applied to major video games.
