GTA 6: The "Extended Look" Has Arrived, Revealing Over 150 New Details — Everything That Happened on August 27 and 28, 2026

The last two days have marked, without exaggeration, the most important moment in Grand Theft Auto VI's marketing campaign to date. After years of waiting, short trailers, and a flood of unofficial leaks, Rockstar Games finally delivered fans an extensive, controlled look at the game, dubbed "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look." The material arrived in partnership with Netflix on Thursday, August 27, and spread to YouTube and other platforms in the following hours, already within August 28. Below is everything that was confirmed, what changed compared to earlier rumors, and how the community reacted.

The Event: Netflix as an Unprecedented Stage for a Game

The choice of Netflix to premiere the material drew attention on its own. According to Variety's coverage, the entire "Extended Look" content was captured entirely from footage of the game running on a PlayStation 5, and represents the longest material ever publicly shown about the title, surpassing the two trailers released over the past few years. The 26-minute presentation was exclusive to Netflix for about six hours before being released on Rockstar's official YouTube channel, around 9 p.m. ET, already into the early hours in Brazil.

Demand for the event was so high that the monitoring site Downdetector logged more than three thousand error reports for Netflix shortly before the broadcast began, a sign of how many people were trying to access the platform at the same time.

Jason and Lucia: The Couple at the Center of the Story

The material reinforces what was already known: the protagonists are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple who get pulled into a criminal conspiracy stretching across the fictional state of Leonida after a seemingly simple score goes wrong. The official synopsis describes the two as people who "always knew the deck was stacked against them," finding themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.

According to The Wrap's coverage, the presentation opens with Jason and Lucia arriving to "pick up" a delivery inside a run-down building full of people, a scene that already demonstrates the ability to freely start conversations and interactions around the environment. Throughout the 26 minutes, the duo appears in both cinematic scenes and playable sequences, constantly alternating between everyday life in Vice City and their climb through the criminal underworld.

One of the most talked-about new features is the ability to freely switch between Jason and Lucia during much of the campaign. An example cited by ComicBook's coverage shows a moment when the pair are fleeing from the police: the scene begins with Jason firing from the back seat of the car, then the perspective switches to Lucia, who is driving. While some missions remain exclusive to one character or the other, this freedom to swap appears to be a defining feature of how the campaign was designed.

Six-Star Wanted System and Appearance-Based Identification

One of the most anticipated elements — already speculated based on earlier leaks — is the overhaul of the "wanted" system. Reports indicate that the maximum wanted level returns to six stars, surpassing the five-star ceiling seen in GTA V. In addition, police appear to identify the player based on elements such as clothing, physical appearance, and the vehicle being driven, making getaways more strategic than simply "switching cars and disappearing."

An Approximately 80-Hour Campaign

According to statements attributed to Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, his own most recent playthrough of the campaign took about 80 hours to complete. The narrative structure follows a chapter-based format, in line with what Rockstar previously did with Red Dead Redemption 2, avoiding rushing the player toward the ending.

Vice City, Leonida, and a Map of Massive Proportions

The fictional state of Leonida once again houses the iconic Vice City, but the material reinforces that the city is only a fraction of the game's universe. Reports compiling both official information and earlier leaks mention regions such as the Leonida Keys (tropical islands connected by highways), the Grassrivers wetlands, the faded coastal community of Port Gellhorn, the industrial region of Ambrosia — dominated by a sugar processing plant — and Mount Kalaga National Park, a vast wilderness area in the north of the map.

Unofficial estimates circulating even before the official event pointed to a map somewhere between two and two-and-a-half times larger than GTA V's, though Rockstar has not confirmed exact figures so far.

Optional Romance Between the Protagonists and New Everyday Mechanics

Another highlight from the previews shared with the specialized press, according to a roundup by Vice, is the existence of an optional romance between Jason and Lucia, woven into the duo's progression throughout the campaign. Add to that leisure activities and mini-games, expanding the options beyond the main missions.

The Mood Among Fans: Enthusiasm With a Grain of Caution

The community's reception, tracked in real time by outlets like Push Square, was largely positive, though not unanimous. Part of the audience described the presentation as "seriously chaotic" in a good way, praising the pacing of cuts that reveal system after system without any voiceover on top. Another portion of fans, however, viewed the material as closer to a "mood piece" — full of cinematic scenes — rather than a genuinely long demonstration of pure gameplay, estimating that the total uninterrupted gameplay shown was close to just five minutes out of the full 26.

The Backdrop: The Mysterious "CyberLeek" Leaks

None of this happens in a vacuum. In the weeks leading up to the official event, a person or group identifying themselves as "CyberLeek" had been releasing gameplay videos claiming to come from a playable build of the title, along with an alleged full map of Leonida. This material, still not officially verified, already referenced elements such as the six-star system, vehicle fuel gauges, a stamina system in melee fights, and a kind of morality system — features that, for the most part, ended up actually appearing (or being confirmed in similar form) in Rockstar's official material.

Rockstar and Take-Two reacted to the situation with visible irritation. According to Variety, the publisher issued subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord the week before the event, attempting to obtain account data that could help identify who is behind the leaks. Despite the pressure, CyberLeek's identity remains unknown, and Rockstar's internal investigation reportedly has not yet found a definitive answer as to how the leak happened.

What Remains Unanswered

Even after such extensive material, some questions remain without an official answer. The most repeated one among specialized outlets, including PC Gamer, concerns the PC version: as of this article's publication, Rockstar has not confirmed a release date for computers, keeping the focus on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The future of GTA Online was also not mentioned during the presentation, fueling further speculation about the next steps for the company's online franchise.

Release Date Remains Confirmed

Despite all the turmoil caused by the leaks in the days leading up to the event, Rockstar reaffirmed that the release date remains unchanged: November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with the Standard Edition priced at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99.

With the "Extended Look" now out, attention turns to the coming months, when new details about gameplay, multiplayer, and any potential PC version announcements are expected to surface more frequently as the release date approaches.
