Grand Theft Auto 6 has just suffered another major wave of leaks, and this time the material circulating online is considerably more interesting than the usual rumors and alleged screenshots. Only days before Rockstar Games is scheduled to present an official extended look at the game, videos and images claiming to show actual GTA 6 gameplay have appeared across social media.
The timing could hardly be worse for Rockstar. The company has officially announced that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix and Rockstar's own platforms on August 27, giving fans their first substantial official look at gameplay.
Before that presentation arrives, however, the internet is already examining what could be one of the biggest GTA 6 leaks since the infamous 2022 development footage breach.
There are three major elements to the current leak: new gameplay footage, the alleged full GTA 6 map, and a series of supposed gameplay mechanics revealed by the leaked material.
1. GTA 6 Gameplay Footage Appears Online
The biggest leak is undoubtedly the gameplay footage itself.
Several short videos have begun circulating online, including a clip showing Jason, one of GTA 6's two protagonists, apparently at a property near the coast. The footage shows him walking around, interacting with the environment and, most notably, playing basketball.
The basketball sequence is particularly interesting because it demonstrates that GTA 6 may contain significantly more detailed character interaction and side activities than previous games in the series.
Jason can apparently pick up the ball, dribble, shoot and interact with it naturally. The ball also appears to react to the surrounding environment, including water. Other leaked footage reportedly shows driving and additional gameplay situations.
The footage is not officially confirmed by Rockstar, so it should still be treated as an alleged leak. Nevertheless, there are several details that have made the footage difficult for many observers to dismiss as a simple fake.
The animation quality, environmental detail, sound design and character movement have all attracted attention. Some viewers have also noticed similarities between the movement system and Rockstar's previous major title, Red Dead Redemption 2.
That does not necessarily mean the footage represents the final version of GTA 6. In fact, reports and community investigations suggest that the material could originate from an older development build, potentially from around 2023. That claim remains unconfirmed, but if true, it would mean Rockstar has had several years to improve the graphics, animations and mechanics shown in the leaked footage.
That distinction is important.
Fans should not look at the leaked footage and assume that it represents exactly what GTA 6 will look like when it launches. Development builds can contain unfinished animations, temporary assets, incomplete interfaces and systems that are later changed or removed.
Even so, seeing actual gameplay systems operating inside the game world is far more significant than another collection of anonymous rumors.
2. The Alleged Full GTA 6 Map Has Leaked
The second major leak is potentially even more important: an alleged map of GTA 6 has appeared alongside the gameplay footage.
Images circulating online reportedly show what is being described as the game's complete map, providing a much broader view of Leonida than Rockstar has officially shown so far. Reports indicate that the leaked map contains multiple regions and counties surrounding Vice City.
This is particularly significant because Rockstar has been extremely careful about revealing the geography of GTA 6.
The trailers have shown Vice City, rural areas, beaches, highways, waterways and other parts of Leonida, but they have not provided players with a complete official overview of the game world.
If the leaked map is authentic, it could answer several questions that fans have been debating for years.
One of the most interesting claims circulating around the leak is that the map contains five counties. However, this is based on analysis of the leaked material rather than an official Rockstar confirmation. The map should therefore be considered provisional until the company reveals more information.
The alleged map also appears to support the idea that GTA 6 will not simply be another Vice City game. Instead, Vice City could serve as the major urban center within a much larger state.
That would be consistent with Rockstar's approach in Grand Theft Auto V, where Los Santos was surrounded by a substantial rural and wilderness environment. GTA 6 appears to be taking that concept considerably further.
If the leaked map really is the final or near-final layout, players could be looking at a game world designed around considerably more varied environments than the previous generation of GTA.
There is still an important caveat, however: leaked development maps can change. Roads can be removed, regions can be redesigned and entire areas can be repurposed during development.
Therefore, the map leak is fascinating, but it should not yet be treated as an official representation of the final game.
3. The Leaks May Reveal Several New Gameplay Mechanics
The third and perhaps most interesting part of the leak is what players claim to have discovered about GTA 6's gameplay systems.
According to analysis of the leaked footage and images, GTA 6 could feature a surprisingly large number of mechanics designed to make the world more interactive and realistic.
Among the reported systems are vehicle fuel and maintenance mechanics. Vehicles may apparently require refueling and maintenance, potentially making cars more than disposable transportation.
The leaked material has also reportedly shown systems for storing weapons and equipment in vehicles. Instead of carrying an unlimited arsenal directly on the character, players may need to manage what equipment they keep with them and what remains stored in a vehicle.
Another intriguing claim concerns vehicle damage. Leaked footage reportedly shows more detailed scratches, impacts, sparks and tire effects.
There are also reports of a six-star wanted level, suggesting that Rockstar could be bringing back the maximum wanted level from earlier games in the series. GTA V reduced the wanted system to five stars, so the return of six stars would represent an interesting change.
NPC behavior may also have received a major upgrade.
According to community analysis of the leaked footage, NPCs can reportedly react more dynamically to traffic incidents, fights and aggressive player behavior. Some reports even claim that police can perform roadside speed enforcement, while ordinary NPCs may become involved in road-rage situations.
The leaked basketball sequence has generated another interesting claim: side activities could potentially influence character attributes.
In the footage, Jason apparently earns a statistic called Focus after successfully shooting a basketball. If this system is representative of the final game, GTA 6 could be introducing a broader character-development system in which seemingly minor activities affect specific abilities.
That would represent a significant evolution from GTA V.
Another reported feature is a possible honor or morality system reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption 2. The existence of such a system has not been officially confirmed, but screenshots and gameplay analysis have led some fans to believe that Rockstar may be experimenting with a more reactive protagonist system.
The leaked footage may also show more advanced stamina mechanics, improved water physics, denser vegetation, more realistic tire smoke and additional environmental reactions.
Again, none of these features should be described as officially confirmed GTA 6 mechanics. They are observations and claims based on leaked material.
Why These Leaks Matter
What makes this particular leak different from the endless stream of fake GTA 6 rumors is the sheer amount of material appearing at once.
The internet has seen countless fake screenshots, fabricated maps and invented "insider" information since GTA 6 was announced. Most of them disappear within hours.
This time, however, multiple pieces of alleged gameplay footage are circulating alongside a map and detailed observations about mechanics. Major gaming publications have independently reported on the footage, while communities dedicated to GTA 6 are actively analyzing individual frames and systems.
There is also evidence that copyright or takedown actions have been occurring against some copies of the leaked material, although that alone does not constitute definitive proof of authenticity.
The timing makes the situation even more remarkable.
Rockstar is less than two weeks away from its official extended presentation. The company has already confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on August 27 at 3 p.m. ET on Netflix and Rockstar's official channels.
That means the leaked footage could be giving players an unofficial preview of systems Rockstar was preparing to reveal itself.
There have also been claims that Netflix briefly displayed a listing suggesting the extended presentation could consist of three episodes with more than an hour of combined footage. However, this particular claim has been disputed, with other reports saying that the viral three-episode listing was fake. It should therefore not be treated as established information.
Rockstar's Biggest Challenge Yet
Rockstar Games has already experienced one of the most significant leaks in modern gaming history.
In 2022, unfinished GTA 6 development footage was stolen and released online, revealing characters, locations, vehicles and gameplay systems years before the game's official marketing campaign.
The current situation is different because GTA 6 is now much closer to release. Rockstar is actively preparing its marketing campaign, and the official extended look is scheduled for August 27.
The latest leak therefore arrives at precisely the moment when Rockstar wants to control the flow of information.
For fans, however, the leaked footage is providing an unusually detailed glimpse at what Rockstar has been building behind closed doors.
The three biggest revelations are clear: alleged gameplay footage, an alleged map of Leonida, and a collection of gameplay systems that could make GTA 6 substantially deeper than GTA V.
None of them should be considered officially confirmed until Rockstar itself shows the corresponding features.
But if even a significant portion of these leaks is genuine, GTA 6 could be much more mechanically ambitious than the trailers have suggested.
And with Rockstar's official Extended Look arriving on August 27, fans will not have to wait long to find out which parts of the leaks were real.
